Some friends of mine turned me on to FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS probably around a decade ago. It's additionally interesting now that I live in the country where they are from, New Zealand, as I close out the first month of my family moving here. This comedy/folk duo play hilarious soft rock and parody numbers from which they have won a Grammy. Due to their sizable, international recognition, I don't feel the need to go into much here.

Basically Bret and Jermaine played hilarious rock/comedy shows which culminated with the 'Folk the World Tour' in 2002. Afterwards they started writing for their BBC Radio Series, although a lot of it was improvised. Much of this material was used as the basis in the TV show for which the first season premiered in 2007 alongside their first TV-to-cd album 'Flight of the Conchords'. This record is a fucking gem, as is the entire first season of the show. Boasting some of the duo's best tracks, this first studio recorded LP stands as the penultimate FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS experience, as for the second season the band warned that they had but a few ideas left. Therefore the density of awesomeness contained on the first record is the one to start with, housing great songs such as "Ladies of the World", "Mutha-uckas", "Leggy Blond" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Room". But holy moly here are the ultimate gems and their best lines:

"Hiphopopotamus vs. Rhymenoceros" = "They call me the hiphopopotamus, my rhymes are bottomless...(silence) - They call me the hiphopopatumus, flows glow like phosphorus poppin' off the top of this esophagus rockin' this metropolis."

"Robots" = "The humans are dead. We used poisonous gases and we poisonous gases."

"Business Time" = "When you're with me, girl, you only need two minutes because I'm so intense. You whisper something sexy like, 'Is that it?' I know what you're tryin' to say girl. You're trying to say, 'Awww yeah that's it'. And then you tell me you want some more and I'm not surprised, but I'm quite sleepy."

"Bowie" = "Is it cold out in space, Bowie? You can borrow my jumper if you'd like, Bowie. Does the cold of deep space make your nipples go pointy, Bowie? Do you use your pointy nipples as telescopic antennae to transmit data back to Earth. I bet you do, you freaky old bastard, you."

In 2008 FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS released their final TV-to-cd album titled 'I Told You I Was Freaky' which has some great stuff, but feels forced to completion. The only standout tracks here are "Hurt Feelings", "Sugalumps", "Too Many Dicks"and "Carol Brown". My personal favourite is "We're Both in Love With a Sexy Lady", as it weaves a hilarious and ridiculous story about Bret and Jermaine talking about a girl that they've each fallen in love with, which happens to be the same woman they had just met randomly in the park. Here's my favourite part, "Do you mean the girl who came up to us when when we were runnin' in the park just now, and she was looking for her epileptic dog? Yeah, that's the girl. "Was her name Brabra?" "No, I think it was Barbara." "Her name was Brabra." "It was Barbara there is no such name as Brabra." "It's Brabra." "No, it's Barbara." Like I said, it's good, as is the TV season, but as a whole it pales in comparison to the first.

In 2009 they released a bunch of singles from the second record but nothing new really, although they have played some shows since, including Austin, Texas in 2016. They've also released quite a few music videos from the first album which I've linked below, as well as some TV videos that basically serve as a music video, anyways. If you haven't checked out the show that goes with the songs, you are missing out. It's hilarious stuff that will always hold a special place in my heart. As do these two full lengths. Sweet as.
