SNAG has a bit of a split personality, much in the way Pregnancy Pact had before reshuffling and becoming Crowning. Their debut, self titled EP 'Snag' begins with three songs rooted in screamy hardcore and embeds shifts into emo/indie rock territory over the course of the EP, most notably in the final three tracks. I mean, I dig the second half but the first half give me goosies.

The opening track "Hydraulic Fracturing Makes the Earth Shudder" is a tantalizing first moment. 25 seconds in you'll think you've unearthed some unreleased Textbook Traitors songs when the early emo-violence style really took root, but afterwards the song slides in and out of semi-mathy and noodley gang chants not unlike No Tongue and...maybe...Stop It!!? I dunno but the unexpected hybrid works pretty well. Following in the steps of the first track but inverted, is "Cold Blooded Mammals" that has a dreamy and distant emo/rock thing goin' on that sounds a hell of a lot like parts of the final Mouse Fitzgerald album. Once the song busts into second gear at 1:37 I'm goddamn smitten. The back and forth screaming again isn't far from Mouse FitzgeraldFraera, For Want Of and Lessener, which dissipate once that killer ending takes hold at around the three-minute mark. Next up is the ultimate SNAG song, "The Heat". This scorcher busts out some seriously sick shit over its 2:56 length, with the penultimate comparison being Birthday Boyz, and that, is not the easiest thing to do. Y'know, cuz Birthday Boyz were incredible. The dual screaming, the transcendent chord progressions, the intensity...this track has it all. An additional, interesting note on this beaut is the final 30 seconds, which bares a strong resemblance to late Bravo Fucking Bravo work. Track four is where things really slow down and focus on clean vocals and melodies instead of concentrated screamy hardcore, as "Capitalism is a Pyramid Scheme" begins chill and soothing but injects a post-hardcore and experimental second half that doesn't quite have an anchor. "Who are Those Condo's For, Anyway?" delivers jangly, punchy and noisy rock with some honest singing that starts up just after halfway through and is layered over withdrawn screaming while sounding akin to Sweetheart. Closer "A Century of Crisis (For Enbridge)" is vast, clocking in at 6:18, epic as fuck and tells the story of environmental pollution due to the pursuit of money via gas/oil. Desperate vocals and trumpet steal the show during the build. From 3:47 onward shit gets furious and tears nearly all of the melodies down before reverting back to a pretty chill emo outro.

All in all this is a hell of debut and I look forward to hearing more from them.
