FRAERA began and started releasing in 2016. They hail from Toronto, Ontario in Canada and are a four-piece with a vocalist, guitarist/vocalist, bassist/vocalist and drummer. Whether it's intentional or not is irrelevant, but for such a new band they've already got a lot going for them as they don't really sound like they're trying to sound like another band. So they've carved a little niche with their first three two-track digital releases, which I think is quite impressive. Decent comparisons might be Circle Takes The Square, Meteors The Entire Night and City Of Caterpillar, although it depends on what point in each song we are talking about.

I was lucky enough to catch the band's first ever show in the spring of 2017 (April 15th, to be exact) along with Respire, Foxmoulder and Commuovere and you can read about it and watch two videos here. I was pretty impressed so I asked if the band wanted to fill in for a band that had to pull out of Zegema Beach Fest in the summer of 2017, thus opening the final night on June 3rd, with another review and three or four videos here.

Let's quickly talk about their three, 2-song digital EPs. The first was released in 2016 and is titled 'Present Unpleasantness' and is the screamiest of the three. "The Ceiling Smoke" opens with a flurry of dark and screamy hardcore, perhaps in the vein of Italy's I Am Your Curse, with a relatively chill/eerie slowdown halfway through the track. "The Cement & The Skin" does the same but with more emphasis on dreamy, swaying collections of guitar notes, and yet it still straddles a completely cohesive border between anger and beauty.

The second EP popped above ground in early 2017 with 'Miserybuiltthishome'. Opener "I Left My Love in the Lies That I Heard" has a very chill intro with a hella 90s screamo vibe that goes from relaxed to full tilt after the first 50 seconds. The vocals from the primary vocalist are noticeably less screamy, and fall more into the Circle Takes The Square category. "I Found My Heart in a Hole in the Earth" has a frantic opening that includes some killer drums and employs the most vocal variations due to two members doing so back and forth but will lull you in with those fantastically dreamy, slow, emo bits thanks to Lucas' guitar noodling. The song begins to culminate from just before the five-minute mark but the payoff isn't as rewarding as the road to get there.

Also released in 2017 was 'Every Mistake I Make Haunts Me When I Wake', the most complete yet shortest collection to date. "Awake in the Worst of Days" has the three standing members screaming together as well as doing their own separate parts, making it a very interesting and awesome track. There's also some playful guitar riffs from 1:52 that climax with an awesome ending from 3:40 onward. "For What It's Worth I Still Think You're the Worst" begins as the most volatile track that the band has put recorded and doesn't let up until 1:48 when layers of screams are wrapped around the instrumental skeleton.

Good stuff, FRAERA. And if you dig, readers, I've been told to expect more songs in early 2018!
